The throttle response is much better and drivability also improved. I am very happy with the results, and the installation of the Fiveology Racing MAF kit went smooth without any issues. The kit comes complete with all you need minus the throttle body and EGR spacer. Since I was wanting to use my stock air box with the kit I needed to purchase a 3.5" silcone coupler and clamps or I could have just bought conical filter with a 3.5" inner diameter and clamp to mount onto the 73mm MAF meter housing.

I upgraded to HoseTechniques silicone couplers and stainless T-bolt clamps. Visually they look much better than what was provided in the kit. They are high quality pieces and if you want the best then spending a little more is worth it in the end.

To make the short ram tube from Fiveology Racing work with the stock air box we trimmed the length down by about two inches. Of course with more air flow more fuel is needed and the 24 lb. injectors are up for the task. The wiring was straight forward and that task was handled by John Scatterday of Scatts Automotive.

All in all the Fiveology Racing MAF kit is the best way to go if you're thinking about converting your speed density equipped '86-'88 5.0 Mustang to mass air flow. There's still many questions all over the forums and internet on how to do this. There's also a lot of misinformation and editor Evan Smith wanted to do this article - so I jumped in. Instead of showing 5 different ways to do the 5 lug swap I focused on the "best" way to do it with SN95 Mustang parts. I also chose to go rear disc instead of just going drum because I think overall it's not much more money to do it and the improved braking is a much welcomed thing for any Fox Body Mustang. I plan on putting the complete tech article up when i complete my foxrods.com page. For now try to get by your local magazine rack and pick up a copy if you don't already have a subscription. I know I haven't been posting regularly but, it's winter and it's hard to get motivated to work on my Mustangs.
I have been SCRAPING for about 5 years trying to come up with the money to paint the 85 Notchback. I have everything done and ready to go in. I wasn't going to paint it and just get it running. But after I decided to go with the UPR complete K-Member kit and coil overs I couldn't just put all that nice hardware including a fresh new detailed engine in the original engine bay. I think I finally got the money together for the paint job and the smooth inner fenders. I really want to do it right. The engine bay is going to be so clean and vboid of most of the wires and front accessories that I really wanted to clean things up. Plus the single stage blue metallic repaint by the previous owner on all the top surfaces is starting to lift. The car only has 74,000 original on it and is one of the tightest 5.0s I've ever seen. So hopefully if all goes well she goes to paint in March/April. Still a lot of work to do including mocking up the manual brakes - yep manual. I have the SN95 front disc brake swap and am converting the rear to disc. I've spoken with a couple guys that run this combo with still better braking than the factory stock power brakes with disc/drum combo from the factory. It's all about saving weight with this car. It's being built to be fast on the strip first, and then a car that is very driveable on the street.

The '88 GT driver is still running good packing on 60 miles a day driving to work. Right now the steering pump is starting to get whiny, and the regulator in my brand new 3G 130 amp alternator is going bad already. The parts store ordered the wrong steering pump (for a 2001???) and it's been 3 weeks now and they had to order another one! I'm still waiting for the alternator replacement. How does anybody make any money with this kind of crappy service? Not my mechanic's fault he's trying to get the parts as fast as possible. Whatya do? I'm also gonna need tires soon so at that time I'll upgrade to the 17x9 Bullitts out back and moutn up 275/40-17s in favor of the 245s on the 17x8 out back. Can't wait.

I have a potential unlimited budget fox body Mustang build with a shop brewing. I'm very excited about this and even though I have to remain tight lipped about the project I can say that it will probably be one of the baddest fox body Mustangs built to date. Unique exterior styling never seen before with redesigned front and rear bumper covers. New front and rear spoilers, minitubs, 18s, and more. Can't wait!

Once I replace the 3G alternator, I will be posting a diagram and installation instructions on how to install a 3G Alternator in your fox the EASY way.JohnnyGMachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07869675594974886159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441077701098859861.post-72388724621630931102008-12-23T07:41:00.000-08:002008-12-23T07:58:30.480-08:00Drifting 5.0 Mustangs

I knew that eventually we'd see a couple of these. These cars come with a ton of low end torque right out of the box, they're fairly lightweight, and cheap to buy. I've been real busy with SEMA projects and then took a vacation away from home with the family for Thanksgiving. I'm back now and have some updates on the '88 GT Daily Driver. Last night we yanked out the tired original 75 amp alternator and swapped in the 3G 130 amp alternator from PA-Performance. I found once again that there is just too much information and too many people on the Internet making yet another conversion on a fox body more difficult and time consuming than needed. I looked all over the net and compared notes between many different sources to try and find the best way to do this conversion. Even the directions that came with the 3G upgrade wire kit were far more complicated than needed. As a matter of fact a simple diagram would've worked wonders and saved a whole lot of reading and head scratching. For now we had to use some 4 gauge wire for the ground and main power wires to the alternator since we were finishing this up late and nobody in town had 4 gauge wire I could buy by the foot. I usually have everything ready prior to the swap but hadn't this time. Didn't think it'd be difficult to get the wire. So I will post updated photos with clean wiring, clean directions and even a diagram drawing on how to do this with your 86-93 Mustang. Once I get to doing it on my '85 Coupe I will update wiring instructions if needed.

Hopefully next week I will have install pics of the KYB AGX adjustable struts and shocks going in and some feedback on performance.
JohnnyGMachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07869675594974886159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441077701098859861.post-73466671723103981662008-10-06T08:37:00.000-07:002008-10-07T10:22:03.919-07:00The ULTIMATE Fox Rod???!!!!

This is Mike Murillo's new Outlaw 10.5 Mustang Twin Turbo Terror! I can't for the life of me figure out why this issue should for the most part be cleared up. But it's not. Part of this could be due to people being new to fox bodies and don't want to spend a lot of time looking for old posts on it but for the most part a lot of guys think a 10.5" wheel with a 305 width tire will just bolt right in!!! Now I'm exaggerating a little here but if you look at the pictures above this is what I see the majority of the time. A 17"x9" wide wheel on the front of a fox body with a 245/45/17 tire stretched onto it yet still sticking outside the wheel well lip is just not good looking - period. If you like tearing up your tires and having them scrub up against your wheel well lip then fine it fits great - NOT! I have seen guys properly fit a 9" wide wheel up front but it involves getting the right parts and making modifications to make it fit properly. Same thing with the rear wheel and tire fitment.

I'm just flat out tired of seeing wheels and tires sticking outside of the wheel well lip and the owner looks at it and says "Yeah, they fit fine" - C'mon are you serious??? I've even seen worse than what I have pictured above, they just jack up the rear a little so it doesn't hit and only lower the front! Some will defend their rides with poorly fitting wheel and tires by saying "It's a matter of opinion - I think it looks great" Maybe, ok. Then let's look at safety - do you think having your wheels hit the fender lips under high speed cornering is safe? How about driving down the highway at 70 mph and hitting a dip in the road and having the wheel well lip slam down on top of the tire - I can't imagine that being safe. What is the point of a wheel well lip? Was this just an afterthought styling idea by the OEMs or was it included in the design to allow wheel and tire clearance to the body.

Maybe I'm spending too much time typing about this but ya know if people ask if they fit and they don't say - there might be some clearance issues. If somebody asks if they stick outside the wheel well lip - don't say no and they stick out. Best of all, if you found a way to fit some meaty fat tires on some really wide wheels on your Fox Body - tell us how you got it to work the right way.

I COULD get into tires that are too wide for the wheels but maybe I'll save that one for another time.

Here's some places to check out for some good (and maybe some bad) wheel and tire combinations for your Fox Body. Always research ahead of time and measure twice before you buy especially when it comes to proper (and safe) wheel and tire fitment on your Mustang.

Corral.net - there's atleast 100 pages of pics and info.

http://forums.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=296569

Fox Body Forums - Scroll down to their wheels and tire forum.

http://foxbodyforum.com/

JohnnyGMachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07869675594974886159noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441077701098859861.post-70074584463743568532008-09-26T09:35:00.000-07:002008-09-26T09:38:01.191-07:00

As all of us know, it's getting rarer and rarer to even see fox body Mustangs driving down the road everyday. I haven't seen a Capri just drivin' around in years. The only time I really see any Fox Body Mustangs driving is the same 3 I see on the way to work. 2 white 87+ GTs with ponies, and a blue with silver ground effects white top 5.0 GT. Occasionally there's a real clean 83-84 GT hatcback red with chrome cobra Rs and black hood stripe that I see on the way to work. Evertime I see any of these 5.0s drivin', we all give each other the "nod" or a wave or some sign of some kind basically indicating "Nice Fox Mustang".Pretty similar to what a lot of motorcycle guys do - almost like a fox body brotherhood LOL!

So if you're drivin' around in your 5.0 and you see a good lookin' Fox Body Stang or Capri - you know what to do!

JohnnyGMachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07869675594974886159noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441077701098859861.post-63585705352402080912008-09-25T10:22:00.000-07:002008-09-25T10:32:03.488-07:00SOUTHEASTERN FOXBODIES!!!

I'd been a lurker on this website for a little while and finally signed up. I saw the new Billet Specialties Street Lite wheels, and knew right away they’d do the trick! Designed for the street or strip the new Street Lite wheel is SFI 15-1 approved, light weight, and features an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. These machined billet 15” Street Lites are absolutely gorgeous and combine a polished & machined finish for an aggressive look. Sizes range from 15x3.5 to 15x15. They accept mag shank lug nuts and can be used with 5/8” racing studs. Out front I ran a set of Kumho Powerstar 758 165/80-15 tires on the 15x3.5" wheels. Out back i wrapped the rear 15x8 wheels with two giant slabs of Nitto Drag Radial 555Rs in a chunky 275/50-15 size! I can already feel how much better these tires hook and I haven't dropped the pressure down on 'em yet. I've had these before on 2 other Mustangs an consistently dropped 3/10s of a second running this wheel and tire combination. Not Bad. For more info on these new Street Lites, contact Billet Specialties at 1-800-245-5382 or check out their website at http://www.billetspecialties.com/ Summit Racing also carries these wheels in stock for many applications http://www.summitracing.com/

JohnnyGMachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07869675594974886159noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441077701098859861.post-12098421517914002212008-08-29T06:09:00.000-07:002008-08-29T09:31:24.550-07:0080 Miles Per Gallon, 400 horsepower Fox Body Mustang

If you think 80 miles per gallon and 400 horsepower don’t go together you better think again because Doug Pelmear, a 48-year-old electronics engineer and master mechanic from Napoleon, Ohio has done just that with his 1987 Ford Mustang.
Mr. Pelmear created his Mustang and more specifically the technologically advanced engine to compete in the $10 million Progressive Automotive X Prize: a “race” to find an affordable, marketable automobile that gets at least 100 miles per gallon. One heck of a g-Machine that’s what! This model was built by Chris Lee for a Diecast model car contest on www.diecastpub.com sponsored by GMP Diecast. Everybody was offered a 1993 Steeda Mustang Cobra model at a substantial discount from GMP to build for the contest. Chris entered the Pro-Touring/Road Racing class and was voted the winner in that class.
By the looks of the amount of fabrication, detail, and just how wild the concept is it’s no surprise that this car catches a lot of attention from anybody who’s seen it. Widebody flares, super wide racing wheels and slicks, splitters, diffusers, twin turbos, turbo system plumbing with heat wrap (wow!), custom interior, custom roll cage – AWESOME.

Even before building this killer corner carver, Chris had a plan and executed it skillfully. GMP Diecast is one of the few premier Diecast companies on the planet that produces super accurate scale replicas with an obscene amount of detail. Some of the models even have roll up and down windows!
One line of models that they do produce is the Fox Body Mustang ranging from 1985 to 1993. It includes ’93 Cobras, ’93 Cobra R, GTs, LXs, Cop cars, and even Convertible versions. But what’s even cooler than a recreation of a stock 5.0 Mustang? You got it, a Hot Rod Mustang! These modified 1:18 scale Mustangs are modified with bigs ‘n’ little, Vortech superchargers, Nos, roll bars, rear seats deleted, 4” cowl hoods, competition seats, Cobra R wheels, Cobra brake kits, lowered suspensions, you name it! GMP is no stranger to great detail and cool working features – it’s a standard on all of their models. Brake lines, rubber radiator hoses, vacuum lines, working suspension, seats articulate, handbrake moves up and down, flocked carpeting, flocked cloth floor mats, cloth seat belts, photo etch buckles, hardware metal hood prop rod, and get a load of the retractable seatbelts?! The sickness never stops!
Now I will have to admit, I’m a little biased – I work there and had a large part in developing these models but being a ’79-’93 Mustang freak, I put a lot of work into these to make sure that even if I didn’t work here that if I saw these – I’d just have to have ‘em….ALL! As a matter of fact there was a time when I didn’t work here and I was buying these Fox Body models at retail. This was before GMP released the new tooling for the ’87-’93 models you see here. Since the new tooling the accuracy and details have doubled and there’s so many more versions we are capable of producing with the new tooling. Don’t forget, these cars are produced in limited quantities and once their gone they’ll never reproduce the same one again.
Anyways, for more info about these Diecast Mustangs, check out www.gmpdiecast.com or click on this link which will take you directly to the ’85-’93 Mustang page http://gmpdiecast.com/products/default.cfm?category=1%3A18%20Scale%20Ford%20Mustangs

You can also contact GMP at 1-800-536-1637
The average retail is $105
JohnnyGMachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07869675594974886159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-441077701098859861.post-48021215171319009552008-08-26T20:40:00.000-07:002008-08-26T21:46:09.059-07:00My 1985 5.0 LX Coupe and 1988 Mustang GT projects

Here are my 2 project cars - My '88 GT Hatchback which is a daily driver that I've had for a little over a year now and my 1985 5.0 LX Coupe which I've had for a little over 10 years now.

1988 Mustang GT - Like most 5.0 fanatics, I want to modify this car to the max! So much potential! BUT, it's my daily driver, I drive it 60 miles a day, I take my daughter to school in it and during my commute it's gotta be comfortable so I can't go too wild on this car. I do however want to make it stand out from the herd. The direction I want to take this car is towards 1 -handling, 2 - balanced power, and 3 - unique styling - accomplishing these 3 areas in that order and maybe a couple simultaneously. Although it's shown here with the new Billet Specialties Street Lites, I wanted to try 'em out for a couple days and to see what it would look like. Bullitts are back on. These wheels are destined for the 85 Notch below.

1985 Mustang LX 5.0 - This is my baby, she's survived 4 girlfriends and I met my wife with this car. This is also the first 5.0 Mustang I ever owned and I also went down the dragstrip for the first time in this car. Lot of history with this car, used to street race this car in Philly, and I've taken here from stock to a pretty heavily modified car that will probably never be done - a true hot rod. This direction I want to take for this car is street and strip - emphasis on STRIP. I will sacrifice comfort for speed and power with this car. It needs to remain streetable but straightline performance is the priority with this 5.0. She's been through a few changes and soon I hope to have her back together and back on the strip. Here in this pic you see it with the bullitt wheels, they are now on the 88 GT. The Street Lites will be going on this car with the Nitto DRs out back.

For now you can view most of my pics, modifications and specs on my FQuick garage linked here http://www.fquick.com/JohnnyGMachine as well as some other fox bodies I've owned, sold or would just like to own. Although I haven't installed this on my car or seen it on a Fox Body with an SN95 swap it looks as though it will work great.
A47 BRAKE COOLING KIT The use of scoops and ducts to direct air to your brake rotors is a proven way to greatly improve breaking performance and is a must for all track or serious performance cars. I wanted to get this going first since it's pretty simple and fast to create but once the FOXRODS.COM official site is built I will be taking a lot of what I post here and move it there. Then, the plan is to use this blog as a news and updates section for FOXRODS.COM. If you have something cool, new, or unique for a fox body ford project please email me and I can put it up on my blog so that other "fox freaks" like us will see it!

WARNING! - This blog and the new site will be primarily centered around '79-'93 Mustangs that are modified. I'm also a fan of the '79-'86 Capris and would like to post content on them being that my first 2 Fox Bodies were '81 Capris! This site isn't for the restoration and stock appearing crowd.
JohnnyGMachinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07869675594974886159noreply@blogger.com0
